Orphaned as an infant Geoffrey was adopted by a English couple living in Frankfurt am Main. He took to the water very quickly and worked on a merchant vessel at the age of 12. By the age of 16 he joined the Kriegsmarine. He climbed the ranks swiftly and eventually commanded a vessel of his own by the beginning of the Great War.
